Frequently Asked Questions

Will I feel different after the session?

Suggestion therapy will have an immediate effect - although it may take a little longer before you or your family notice the more subtle changes. The sense of relaxation and peace following a session of hypnotherapy will often last for several hours.

Will it work?

Each person respondes to hypnotherapy as an individual and therefore will have a slightly different experience. Alan will take account of the personality and motivation of each client to maximise the beneficial effects of the therapy.

A key factor influencing success is the relationship between client and therapist. Alan is fully committed to each client and for best results the client should also be fully committed.

A professional therapist will offer a free screening / initial consultation session as an informal discussion. This will include an assessment of the client's problem and the best route towards resolution.

Does it matter which therapist I choose?

Yes, they should be a professional member of at least one major hypnotherapy organisation (such as being an accredited member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy) with established and high standards of conduct.

Will you make me do something I don't want to do?

You remain in complete control at all times and are free to bring yourself out of the relaxed state of hypnosis at any time should you wish.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes, providing they are willing to participate. Generally speaking, people who are of at least average intelligence make the best subjects.

How confidential is your treatment?

We operate a strict privacy policy and your are unlikely to meet other clients. Our practice is in a complementary health practice where there is no receptionist to bother you. When you enter the front door you could be visiting one of several practitioners, from having your feet done to your back fixed!.

How long is a session?

The free initial session is normally 30 minutes. After that all sessions are 60-75 minutes, depending upon individual needs.

My problem is embarrassing, how might you react?

Basically I've heard it all before and you will find me understanding and helpful.

Can I bring someone with me?

Do bring a friend or relative to the free initial session if you wish. Otherwise, sessions are individual and private one-to-one. Those under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

What is the difference between psychoanalysis and hypnoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis seeks to give a complete explanation of complicated behaviour patterns.  It deals with the subconscious mind (the ‘unconscious’), whereby time consuming techniques bring subconscious elements into the patient's conscious awareness by a process of free association. These are integrated into the personality. Psychoanalysis can be very time consuming – sometimes taking years - and therefore is a major financial investment for the client. Dr Sigmund Freud was the earliest and most famous proponent of psychoanalysis.

Unlike psychoanalysis, hypnoanalysis (analytical hypnotherapy) utilises the valuable memory enhancing properties of hypnosis. Like psychoanalysis, it addresses the subconscious mind, but is a more focused approach. This is designed to permanently resolve the symptom creating emotions at source. The client is liberated from the unwanted physical and mental effects. As a talking therapy, hypnoanalysis is a relatively quick process, mainly due to the use of the relaxed state of hypnosis. It normally taking from 5 -8 sessions, typically on a weekly basis.

Do I have to remember things from my past in order to recover from my problem?

Not necessarily. Different hypnotherapists therapists may take varying approaches. If the cause of your problem is a repressed memory (one that you have consciously forgotten), then bringing this back into conscious awareness (to the front of the mind) can help you to view the problem more positively. Hypnoanalysis is most appropriate here. Then the bottled-up emotions are released and the personality integrated. If you find revisiting certain memories emotionally upsetting then the therapist can assist in dissociating you from them. You can then recall experiences without the full force of their associated emotions.

When I am 'under' will I be asleep?

You don’t go to sleep. ‘Going under’ is just a term which has gained common use, in fact you don’t go under anything, it’s a myth! Rather you will be aware of everything that is happening around you and be more focused than usual. Hypnosis (Trance) is totally natural and occurs, for example, when we daydream - giving us the ability to become engrossed in our subconscious recalls. You will find you are so deeply relaxed that you can drift easily into different levels of awareness.  In particular, your subconscious mind will be active throughout and this is what your therapist will work with. It will be the location of your problem.

Will I remember everything afterwards?

You will remember everything, or most parts of the experience.  You will find that suggestions given to you in hypnosis will resurface in your conscious mind after your hypnosis session. These programmes will influence future feelings and behaviour, but only if such behaviour is within your needs, desires, & ethical code.

Will I give away any secrets whilst I am hypnotized?

No, you won't say or do anything that you don't want to. If you were given suggestions that you didn't morally agree with you would simply disregard these suggestions, or come out of hypnosis spontaneously.

How do I know I will wake up from hypnosis?

Firstly, hypnosis is not about sleeping. Rather, it is a deep state of relaxation - below full waking consciousness, yet above actual sleep. In itself, this is a very refreshing and enjoyable state of mind. It is not possible to remain in hypnosis indefinitely.

Are there any side effects from hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state and there are no negative side-effects.The only ‘side effects’ are beneficial, namely feeling more relaxed both during and after the hypnotherapy session. Also feeling more positive is a typical response.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of altered awareness (changed brain-waves) in which the subconscious mind is more open and receptive to suggestions.  In hypnosis, our mind is also more fluid. In day-to-day living we drift in and out of different levels of awareness very many times a day. This facilitates our absorption of information & feelings, subliminally and consciously.

How does it feel to be hypnotized?

Every person is a little different.  Some people say that their body feels like a lead weight, others say they experience a floating sensation.  Most people say they became beautifully relaxed in mind and body.

Can I be hypnotized against my will?

No, certainly not. Hypnosis requires the client to go with the flow and want to be hypnotised. In this respect, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Hypnosis is essentially a process of cooperation between two or more people. The therapist will show you the way and you can choose if you want to go there or not.  If you are not prepared to accept that hypnosis could benefit you then your best option would be to seek alternative treatment.  Often, open-minded sceptics as clients do well.

I went to a hypnotherapist once before and it didn't work.  Does this mean I'm not able to be hypnotized?

If you can daydream you can experience hypnosis. The most common reason for failure to induce hypnosis is that very occasionally the client feels unable to 'go with the flow', or tries too hard to relax.

Can I be treated for different problems at the same time?

You can, but only if they are interrelated. Because hypnosis requires a focus of attention it is far better to concentrate on one problem at a time.  For example, people who wish to stop smoking may believe that they will gain weight as a non-smoker. Your therapist should be aware of the possibility of 'symptom substitution' and interrelated effects and have the skills to deal with any issues at their core.
